“Assembled for the instruction and enjoyment of society, this collection serves to give a clear picture of the developments of individual modern artists and of the art of our time in general.” (Helene Kröller-Müller)
“The Kröller-Müller Museum is a museum for the visual arts in the midst of peace, space and nature. It offers visitors the opportunity to come eye-to-eye with works of art and to concentrate on the non-material side of existence.” (Kröller-Müller Museum’s Mission, from: Management Plan 2003-2008)
Since its opening in 1938 the Kröller-Müller Museum has built up an internationally renowned collection of classic modern and contemporary art. The museum has strong brand recognition both in the Netherlands (90%) and abroad (60%). With some 300,000 visitors per year, the Kröller-Müller Museum is one of the five most visited museums in the Netherlands. Approximately 27% of visitors come from abroad. The most important reasons for visiting the museum are the permanent collection, including a very large number of works by Vincent van Gogh, and the sculpture garden. More than 35,000 children visit the museum as part of school trips each year.
The Kröller-Müller Museum continues to expand the collection with the acquisition of new works. The museum attempts to offer the public variety in terms of the presentations of the permanent collection, the temporary exhibitions and the education programme. However, the annual State subsidy and revenues generated from entrance fees do not provide sufficient means to realise this aim.
For this reason the Kröller-Müller Museum seeks to build structural partnerships to enhance the general budget. In addition the museum also requires financial support for a variety of special projects including education, publications, conservation and other projects aimed at the general public.
